Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy in Cedar Rapids
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Reduces Pain, Restores Mobility
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) utilizes high-energy sound waves to treat musculoskeletal conditions. It is a noninvasive, drug-free therapy that stimulates healing in bones, tendons, and other soft tissues to reduce pain and restore mobility.
Benefits
of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy
ESWT triggers a variety of biological changes within the body to promote healing, reduce pain, and increase mobility.
Blood Vessel Formation
Nutrients, delivered by blood, are necessary to repair damaged tissues. Newly formed blood vessels improve blood supply and oxygenation supports faster healing.
Reduces Inflammation
Chronic inflammation can damage healthy tissues and result in chronic pain. ESWT helps to reduce swelling to restore normal healing and tissue regeneration.
Interrupts Pain Signals
Chronic pain can become memorized in your interneurons. ESWT reduces pain by interrupting the pain signals associated with muscle spasms and chronic pain.
Collagen Production
The body requires collagen for repairs to occur at the cellular level. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy accelerates the body’s natural production of collagen.
Reduces Calcification
Trauma to soft tissues can result in scar tissue, which may harden over time and become calcified. ESWT breaks up calcifications which are then removed by the body’s lymphatic system.
Releases Trigger Points
Trigger points are tight areas or knots within muscle tissue that can cause pain in the neck, back, shoulder, and limbs. ESWT helps to release trigger points to reduce pain.

ESWT Stimulates the Body's Natural Healing Response
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT
Shock wave sessions last an average of 5 to 10 minutes. First, a gel will be applied to the area. Then, the technician will place the ESWT wand directly onto the skin and move it over the treatment area. You may experience some discomfort during the treatment itself, but the pain is temporary and generally tolerable.
Some patients report immediate pain relief after treatment. However, within 2 to 4 hours after treatment, the area may be sore. If you do experience pain, rest is recommended.
ESWT simulates the body’s natural healing response and requires a series of treatments to be most effective.
