What is a DOT Physical?
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is required for all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. This exam ensures you’re physically and medically fit to operate a commercial vehicle safely. The exam must be completed by a Certified Medical Examiner listed in the FMCSA National Registry.

What to Expect During Your Exam
Your DOT physical exam will include a review of your health history by a certified medical examiner (CME) in our Cedar Rapids clinic. The CME will perform a physical exam, evaluating several items, including:
- General appearance
- Vision and hearing testing
- Blood pressure and heart rate check
- Musculoskeletal examination
- Neurological evaluation
- Urine test for underlying health issues (not a drug test)
Upon exam completion, the CME will report the results to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME). Certified drivers will receive a copy of the medical examiner’s certificate (MEC), or DOT medical card.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Here’s what to bring to your appointment so that you can get in, get out, and be on your way:
- A valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID
- Your current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (if renewing)
- A list of current medications
- Glasses or hearing aids if needed for testing
- Any medical clearance letters (e.g., for CPAP use, insulin use, heart conditions, etc.)
